The ancient Celts believed the veil between the living and the dead was at it's thinnest on Halloween, and celebrated it as the end of the year and also as a festival to remember their loved ones, the dead. The tradition of keeping jack-o-lanterns lit and dressing up in costume was used to "keep the evil spirits at bay".
